Early 20th century, Amazigh (Berber), Morocco
A very traditional amulet sometimes placed around an animal’s neck for protection from predators. The shepherds too will wear these as will other people for protection against other evil forces. This amulet has the most beautiful white (don’t let the image fool you!) cowrie shells. It has been worn and cherished for so long that the shells and leather have nearly become one.
Khadija, in our Marrakech atelier stitched the Italian leather, a deep chocolate color, around her hand woven cord to perfection.
