19th century or before, Mauritania, NW Africa
It’s a shell in the form of a heart, a real heart, hand cut and etched 100+ years ago originally to be worn in the hair, has wonderful patina, a glow and a spot as an experienced heart that has felt a lifetime of love and struggle. The sterling is the superb work of our silversmith. He set the shell on sterling sheet mimicking the shape and curve which hugs the finger so comfortably and finally he secured it with prongs giving a subtle bling. Modern art was inspired by work of the people, folk art, and this ring is a pure example of both.
