19th – early 20th century, Berber, Morocco
Nothing the Berber do is without decorum. Everything they make, be it utilitarian, religious or decorative, attention to detail is given special value. These fabulous wood pieces are the top parts of eye makeup (kohl) applicators. They were hand carved and have such wonderful patina from use. In keeping with the Berber practice of assuming objects of utility for body adornment, Jewels made these into earrings. We capped them with hand wrought sterling and the earring tops are clips. At check out you can request post or French hook tops as they are not very heavy.
