Early – mid 20th century, Berber Morocco
Handiras are traditional clothing of the Berber and are superbly woven incorporating several techniques. This gorgeous piece has indigo, blue, red, brown and white. No loose threads were left on the fringe. There is the expected wear, patched and repaired holes, and fraying selvage.
Strap handles are often attached so the mantle can be wrapped around the shoulders. The patches shown with missing centers on this piece (probably a synthetic material) were used to secure the straps now missing.
