19th century, Mauritania, NW Africa
This shell, hand cut and etched 100+ years ago originally to be worn in the hair, has incredible presence, patina and wear. The sterling is the superb work of our silversmith, Jacob. He set the shell on sterling sheet mimicking the shape and curve which hugs the finger so comfortably and finally, he secured it with prongs, giving a subtle bling. Modern art was inspired by work of the people, folk art, and this ring is a pure example of both.
