19th – 20th century, Amazigh (Berber), Morocco
These little sculptures are kohl applicators.  Yes, applicators for that black eyeliner seen on the ancient Egyptian paintings and sculptures and those already gorgeous dark eyes of the Amazigh (and other Middle Eastern women).  This necklace is a new take on one Jewels designed a few years ago with leather.  She had our silversmith cap each in sterling sheet and link them to a double pieced sterling chain. It’s a work of art.  For the moment there is only one, though when Jewels can find enough of these little gems she’ll make another.  Since she started to collect the applicators a buzz has developed in the markets: the copycats and runners are now on the hunt.

One of a kind

Central stick: just under 4 x 1/2 x 5/8″
Necklace length: 24″

A note about the silver: if it appears to have a red or yellow hue this is the fault of the photographer.  This necklace is composed of sterling silver and wood.
