Early 20th century, San Diu People, Thai Nguyen Province, NE mountains of Vietnam
A hand carved wood plaque with thick remains of pigment. The complimentary images
on both sides are used for good luck, relieving one of bad luck, fending off evil, initiation of
a shaman, building houses and farm buildings. The elaborate use of all the space is due
to the common cultural dislike of open space: “horror vacui”.
This beautiful piece is on a magnificently double hand woven long cord.
