Tibetan Toggle

Description

19th century, Tibet

It is very often that the tools we use in our daily lives, more specifically those we make and use with our hands and bodies, hold so much tangible beauty.  The tools we made in the pre industrial past were for specific purposes and reused over and over until the wear of our lives and time gave them a beauty that doesn’t exist with modern tools and work.  So we hang on to them, to keep this beauty in our lives.

The shell toggle performed the purposed of holding a textile around a body.  The patina it gained from regular use is like glass.

We hand stitched the gorgeous opalescent cream colored Italian leather, creating more beauty- not with a modern machine.
