19th century, Mauritania
These shells were cut and incised in whimisical ways, some possibly to have protective intentions, but all to adorn. Most were worn in the hair and therefore have the most gorgeous patina. This shell has so much incising and patina it’s like a little painting or a portion of someone’s spirit animal, a tiger. Our talented silversmith encased in sterling and the band is wide comfortable.
